Do you need mental health support, but find it difficult to make time for an in-person appointment? Maybe you live in a rural area of Minnesota where there aren’t many providers. Or, perhaps you simply prefer to do things virtually.
Whatever happens to be the case, Summer Counseling can help by providing telehealth services through virtual appointments with a therapist based in Oakdale.
Our clinic specializes in a range of therapeutic services delivered virtually. With a trauma-informed, anti-racist, LGBTQIA+ affirming, and social justice-focused approach, our team of 19 experienced clinicians supports children, teens, adults, and couples through life’s challenges. Many of our therapists are certified in modalities such as EMDR, Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), and play therapy, with options for telehealth when appropriate.
A Wide Range of Options for Online Therapy
Most therapy services offered in person can also be done online. At Summer Counseling, we offer several modalities through online therapy to treat a variety of mental health concerns in teens and adults. Explore your options below!
Therapy Modalities Offered Online
The following therapy modalities and services can generally be provided through telehealth therapy in Minnesota:
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
EMDR is an evidence-based trauma therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories to reduce their emotional intensity. It is commonly used for trauma and PTSD.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)
ART is a trauma-focused approach that, like EMDR, combines guided eye movements with visualization techniques to help clients quickly reduce the emotional impact of painful memories. Many ART techniques can be delivered virtually.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
The gold standard of talk therapy, CBT is used to identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to mental health concerns. Because it relies on discussion, CBT translates well to telehealth.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT focuses on emotional regulation, mindfulness, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. Virtual sessions allow therapists to teach practical coping skills that clients can immediately apply in their daily lives.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
Mindfulness approaches help clients become more aware of their thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations without judgment. Breathing exercises, grounding techniques, and stress-reduction practices are all effectively taught through telehealth.
Depending on your situation, our counselors can sometimes adapt creative, play-based, and family-centered techniques for telehealth. We’re always happy to answer questions!

Who Is Telehealth For?
Telehealth therapy is ideal for Minnesota residents with mobility limitations, transportation challenges, or tight schedules. However, while telehealth is convenient and easy, it may not be appropriate for all clients. We ask that children under age 10 not request online therapy appointments unless previously evaluated by your therapist. Parents may have telehealth appointments as a 'parent-only' session. Please check with your individual insurance company prior to scheduling an online therapy appointment. During inclement weather, your therapist may request a telehealth session in lieu of an in-person appointment.
